Week 2: The Structure Week

Week 2
This Week: Structure

Make the invisible visible. This week isn't about who does more tasks -- it's about who owns the system: noticing what needs to happen, planning when, executing, and following up. You'll divide domains, let a failure teach without rescuing, and protect the stress and connection that make the structure sustainable.

Explained
The Mental Load Iceberg: Doing the Tasks (20%, e.g. washing dishes, grocery shopping, driving to practice, mowing lawn) is visible above the waterline. Managing the Tasks (80%, e.g. noticing dishes need washing, tracking practice schedule, planning meals, remembering yard needs mowing, delegating & following up, managing failures) is invisible below it. Most couples divide the visible work fairly. But the invisible work -- noticing, planning, tracking, delegating -- often falls to one person. That's the mental load.

Doing the tasks is the 20% above the waterline. Managing the tasks -- noticing, tracking, planning, delegating, remembering -- is the 80% most couples never divide.

This is this week's whole premise in one image. "Make the invisible visible" isn't a slogan -- it's naming the 80% below the waterline that a fair-looking task split can still leave entirely on one person.
