Week 1 · Day 11 / 28

The Brutal Assessment

Installing: State of the Union

Test — Where Are You Today

Rate your marriage right now, gut instinct, before you think it through.

Why It Matters

Your score today is a current location, not a permanent verdict. Research shows couples move between zones -- trajectory responds to the choices you make from today forward.

Solution — Today's Practice

"My score was [X]. I'm in the [zone]. The category I scored lowest in was [category]."

Today's Challenge

Most couples grade their marriage on a curve. Today you are the Brutal Historian. You cannot fix what you will not face.

Explained
"Where Do You Stand?" -- four zones of marital health illustrated as stages of a tree's growth, from cracked ground and warning signs (Restoration Zone) through drought (Stability Zone) and a growing seedling (Growth Zone) to a flowering tree (Flourishing Zone), each zone listing its traits and focus. Footer: "Your score is current location, not permanent destination."

The big picture your honest score today sorts you into -- your current location, not your permanent one.

This is the overall outcome your honest score today will sort you into: once you score each category honestly, they combine into one of these four zones. It won't tell you which specific category is dragging you down -- that's what "note which category scored lowest" (part of today's solo work) is for -- but it gives you the wider picture of where your marriage stands today, and why finding that lowest category matters: it's usually the fastest way to move up a zone.

Solo

Score Honestly

Take the Marriage Compass assessment and score it honestly -- note which category scored lowest. Then write one sentence about the thing causing you the most pain right now. Critical rule: don't compare answers with your spouse yet -- independent assessment produces accurate results.

Your response here isn't saved yet -- that lands with activity persistence, a later step.

Couple

State of the Union

Sit facing each other. No phones. Set a timer for 20 minutes. Partner A: "My score was [X]. The category I scored lowest in was [Y]." Partner B: "Thank you for sharing that." Switch. Then ask each other: "What is the one thing causing you the most pain right now?"

Your response here isn't saved yet -- that lands with activity persistence, a later step.

Reflect
End the evening with one honest, non-defensive sentence about what you need.
Your Coach

Reflect with your coach

Which category scored lowest for you, and what do you think that reveals?

Faith Integration
"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment."
1 John 4:18

Honest assessment requires safety, not judgment. Facing the truth about where your marriage stands is not an act of despair -- it's the first act of faith that change is possible.

Prayer Focus

God, give us the courage to see our marriage as it truly is, not as we wish it were. Help us receive each other's honesty without defending. Amen.
